Here are a few hints and tips that might come in handy when practising Age
of Mythology.
The following hints are based on my previous experience with rts-games, and
my experience so far with AoM, both from own games and from watching others.
The golden rule:
Try to do against your opponent what you fear most
that he will do against you
( raid his gold mines, put up a fortress
in a brilliant position, level up fast... etc.. ) |
Economy has been and still is one of the main
factors in the Age-games. Thus, putting time in front of economy is not
always the best choice.
Rushing is not quite as lethal in Age of Mythology as Aoe/Aok/Aoc, especially
because you start with four towers in addition to the protective town
center.
1) Always do economy-upgrades if you can. This means
you should probably do the wood/gold-upgrades while upgrading to classical,
farm-upgrade at some point in classic ( depending on how much you farm
of course....), etc...
There is no correct answer to when and which, but just don't forget them
completely !
2) Make sure your villagers are working effectively. This means that you
should for example make a new lumber-camp when the old one is too far
from the forrest.
3) Controlling settlements is extremely important in AoM,
and crucial to winning the game. An extra settlement means extra protection
for the nearby gold-mines.
Even more important, it gives you extra population-room, which again increases
your chances for controlling the game.
4) As in 3), the same goes for gold mines. Without gold
you're dead...
Don't cramp your town up too much. Try to keep your army a little bit towards
the middle, and build offensive fortresses to help you control goldmines.
( of course this depends on your strategy. If you're going fast-heroic, then
you might want to cramp up, and then get back out on the map with a bigger and
better army )
5) From the golden rule we know how much our opponent
would hate that we raid his goldmines. Many beginners spend most of the
time defending their own gold. Try hitting back !
6) This shouldn't be necessary to mention, but anyway, learn
the counter-units ! If you know your opponent will go heavy on hippikons
in herioc, then make prodromos to counter them. And of course, don't forget
the armor-upgrades, unit-upgrades, and special unit-upgrades that belong
only to a specific God ( like "Thracian Horses" )
7) Learn your God's strengths and weaknesses !
